Cultural Insights & Etiquette for India
  1. Greetings: A slight bow with hands together in Namaste is polite.
  1. Conservative Dress Code: Avoid shorts, tank tops, or revealing clothing, especially for women.
  1. Respect for Religion: In Hindu temples, women on their menstrual cycle are often not allowed to enter. No leather items (belts, wallets, bags) inside Jain temples.
  1. Holy Cows & Sacred Spaces: Cows roam freely and are considered sacred—do not shoo them away.
  1. Tipping & Bargaining: Bargaining is expected in markets but should be done respectfully. In restaurants, tipping 10% is appreciated.
  1. Photography: Many temples, including the Taj Mahal, have restrictions on cameras inside—ask before taking photos.
  1. Right-Hand Rule: Like in Nepal, always eat and give with your right hand.
Taj Mahal
Construction Period
The Taj Mahal was built between 1632-1653 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth.
Cultural Significance
Recognized as the "Crown Jewel of India", it symbolizes eternal love and devotion.
Artisans & Architects
More than 20,000 artisans and architects from India, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire worked on its construction.
Architectural Significance
Architectural Style
A masterpiece of Mughal architecture, blending Persian, Islamic, and Indian influences.
Materials
Constructed from white Makrana marble, which changes color depending on the time of day (pinkish at dawn, dazzling white at noon, golden at sunset).
Structure
Features a central dome (240 ft tall) surrounded by four minarets, symmetrical gardens, and a reflecting pool.
Decoration
The Quranic calligraphy and intricate pietra dura (marble inlay work with precious stones) are some of the finest in the world.
Myth & Mystery
Legend suggests that Shah Jahan planned to build a "Black Taj Mahal" as his own tomb across the Yamuna River, but he was deposed by his son before it could happen.
It's also said that the artisans who worked on the Taj had their hands cut off to prevent them from replicating its design (this is likely a myth).
